One of the upsides to my job is that I get to tag along at any events organised by the DBU. this is something I’m capitalising on for the first time tomorrow. I think I’ve mentioned the Centre for Environmental Communication (ZUK) which is attached (physically and metaphorically) to the DBU. They help to promote the projects funded by the DBU and put on exhibitions, conferences, forums, educational sessions etc. in short they’re very cool. Tomorrow ZUK is holding a one day conference on energy, resources and peace. And I’ll be there!
what I wanted to mention here is something really bizzar that’s going down in Germany at the moment in the area of Energy. Germany has committed to discontinue their Nuclear industry. at the moment they have some 17 nuclear power plants which will gradually be decommissioned by 2021. Great news!
Earlier this year I was at an Environment conference in Berlin and one of the major issues was the fact that these nuclear power plants are to be replaced with over 26 new coal fired power plants. It seems unbelievable to me that one of the most environmentally progressive countries in the world is continuing to build new coal powered infrastructure. The good news is that it won’t happen without a fight. well organised and well networked community groups are galvanising at the proposed sites and apparently even the EU is against the proposed developments.
I’m excited to hear what the experts have to say at tomorrows conference. but for now I’d better sign off.

Very interesting E,
It would be interesting to study their energy mix, and predicted power requirements to examine if this is the only solution. Do you know of any papers in Germany that are similar to some done by The Australia Institute on how RE can be used to replace a coal fired power plant? Perhaps you can ask around. Would be very interesting to see any alternatives that are being proposed.
xxoo from down under.

I saw some graphs like that today. actually something I forgot to mention in my post today was the unanimous anti Nuclear stance which was really exciting for me cause I’ve been kinda awash with australian news radio where we really seem to be loosing that battle of opinions. I’ll try and track down a graph or some research. the other point of relative unanimity was on efficiency. energy efficiency should allow germany’s economy to grow (even double) while keeping energy production steady. apparently…
